This is the entrance to the Three Gorges, as it was in 1996. An area of outstanding natural beauty, it was flooded by the construction The Three Gorges Dam, which was completed in 2012. Even in 1996 the waters were already rising, and in travelling through the gorges we passed several towns which were already being flooded. The sight of a large tower block, abandoned as its lower floors were under water, is one I will always remember.
