The 'Torre del Mangia', constructed between 1325 and 1348, derives its name from its first bell ringer, Giovanni di Balduccio. He was well know in the city for constantly squandering his money, which led to his nickname, 'Mangiaguadagni' (‘the profit eater’), and is remembered today in the abbreviated form, Mangia.
