The Menin Gate is a War Memorial on the eastern edge of the town of Ypres in Flanders. It was officially unveiled on 24th July 1927. Carved on its walls are the names of 54,395 soldiers of the British Empire forces who died in the Ypres salient, but whose bodies have never been found and therefore have no known grave.
Every evening at 8pm local buglers perform the "Last Post" in honour of the dead. This tradition has been observed uninterrupted every day since 2nd July 1928, except during the German occupation of World War II; even then the service resumed on 6th September 1944, the day the town was liberated.
