#18 of 19

The monument in this image is the Scottish National Monument, also known as "Scotland's Shame". It was planned as a memorial for the Scots killed during the Napoleonic Wars, and was intended to be a full-sized replica of the Parthenon. However, the money raised fell well short of the amount needed to fulfil this vision. When this was realised, construction stopped, and the remainder of the money was instead invested in a fund that had been set up to provide pensions for the female relatives of the war dead, the Scottish Widows fund.
