Faces of 7th Art by Photographer Vangelis Rassias
#ChiaraMastroianni#Portrait#Cannes1998
It was in 1998 in Cannes that I made the most interesting portrait of Chiara Mastroianni.
At the time, she was a member of the festival’s jury, chaired by Martin Scorsese.
Of course, I started photographing Chiara in 1993, when she starred in Andre Tesine’s play “The season I prefer”. The protagonist was her mother Catherine Deneuve … In 1998, however, she was now a beautiful woman with characteristics from both her parents. Parents, who never saw them together, except in the cinema …

Perhaps the best portrait of him from the ones I had done in Cannes since 1990…
Although his acting ability has been questioned many times, he proved that with a good director like #mikefigis, a controversial actor can act excellently.
It’s the famous #leavinglasvegasmovie.
With his acting, he also won the Oscar for the best actor.
It was evening on the red carpet when our eyes met,
I used the handheld flash and underexposed at the same time.
The diagonal of the portrait adds more dynamism to his look.
@umathurman portrait @Cannes1994 Happy Birthday @ UmaThurman !
I made her first portrait in Cannes in 1993.
She co-starred with @robertdeniro in the feature film “Mad Dog and Glory”…but her career changed for good with Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”. It’s the Palme d'Or winning film and Uma’s career raising, she became Tarantino’s “muse” with the two film projects “Kill Bill 1” in 2003 and “Kill Bill 2” in 2004…
The first photo is a portrait in 1994 and the second photo is from their exit from the Palais des Festivals at the premiere of “Pulp Fiction”.
I’ve always liked capturing Uma. She had and still has this “relaxation” of being. where whatever happens…happens, as long as you claim it!
Rio de Janeiro-Arpoador 1983.
One of my most moving portraits was of actress Caroline Lang (daughter of the famous culture minister Jacques Lang,,,) then with potential for an interesting career… she had just co-starred in @robert_bresson’s excellent work
“L'argent”. A very good actress who “gave it up"…for another career…(Former SVP and Managing Director of Warner Bros TV French)

During the presentation of the movie “She’s So Lovely” is a 1997 American romantic drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes, and written by John Cassavetes.
This photo is 27 years from today.
In this iconic film, the young actors were awarded Sean Penn won the award for Best Actor at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. Robin Wright received a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role at the 4th Screen Actors Guild Awards.“
It was a moment that remains timeless for its photographic composition…and its historicity…

I used a unique light source, Valcar’s excellent soft box PLB110.
With its polymorphism, it emitted a light that reflected on the faces as embossed surfaces…

I met her in 1997 in Cannes when she co-starred in the famous film project “L.A. Confidential” by the director #curtishanson🎥 (she was awarded the Oscar for supporting actress).
Restrained with a gentle discretion and of course nothing to do with the sensual woman, model and actress.
In one of the photo shoots we did, she lowered her gaze.
It was the most appropriate moment to immortalize her.

From my project and performance exhibition during the film festival with thematic “The Horror”
This form of world cinema, which put its stamp on the USA. with “Night and the city” and in Europe, in France with “Du rififi chez les hommes” and finally his works in Greece which left an era with “Phaedra”, “Top Kapi” and “Never on Sunday"…
When I met him in my studio at the festival I shot him very close with #carlzeiss120mmmacroplanar f/4.
I wanted the face to "come out” of my frame, as if it wanted to talk about all that it experienced in the 3 countries it lived in…

I first met Karyofyllia in the play “Lulu” and she had impressed me… a rising career in the theater, on television, in the cinema, from 1985 until today with her excellent performance in “Fonissa”.
Every time I captured her
she had that sweet-strict smile combined with her look…a special sensuality!
